VETERAN BENEFITS & ASSISTANCE

VA Claims & Separation Benefits

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is committed to ensuring that Veterans, service members, and their eligible dependents receive the benefits they have earned through honorable service.

Navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) claims process can be complex. Through the VFW National Veterans Service (NVS) program, VA-accredited representatives assist claimants in understanding and pursuing their federal VA benefits.

VFW service officers are trained and accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs to represent claimants before the VA. Working within the guidelines established by the VFW National Organization, these representatives assist with:

  • Disability compensation claims

  • Pension benefits

  • Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC)

  • Education benefits

  • Rehabilitation programs

  • Appeals before the Board of Veterans’ Appeals

Representation is provided in accordance with VA regulations and VFW policy. This service is offered free of charge to eligible Veterans, service members, and their dependents.

The VFW Department of Kentucky Service Office operates as part of the VFW National Veterans Service network and works directly with the Louisville VA Regional Office.

Pre-Discharge

Through cooperation between the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the VFW participates in the Pre-Discharge claims program. This initiative allows eligible service members who are within 180 days of separation or retirement to begin the VA claims process prior to discharge.

VFW Pre-Discharge representatives assist service members in preparing and submitting claims and provide guidance on VA benefits, including compensation, education benefits, medical benefits, and VA home loans.

Participation in the Pre-Discharge program helps ensure a smoother transition from active duty to Veteran status.
