Joined the VFW in March 1990 at Captain Lynch-Sergeant Brush Post 1521 in Chester, Pa. after participating in Operation Just Cause (Panama). This was the VFW Post that he was practically raised in with his father being Past Post Commander and his mother being Past Ladies Auxiliary President. Membership transferred to Alvin Shifflet Post 5593 in Russellville, Ky. in December 2002 after making Kentucky home. Transferred to Churchill Downs Post 2921 in July 2008 after moving to Louisville where he maintains his membership to this day as a Gold Legacy Life Member.
 
Served as Forward Detachment Commander for Post 5593 members stationed in Iraq 2004-2005.
5 terms as Post Commander at Post 2921, 2 times All State and 3 times 100 plus awards.
Past 6th District Commander.
Elected to office of State Surgeon in June 2019.
Founder and Past President of VFW Kentucky Motorcycle Riders Group.
Captain, Kentucky VFW State Color Guard.

Enlisted April 18th 1983, Retired December 31, 2010
Awarded Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 bronze campaign service stars.
Other military awards include the expert field Medical Badge, Army Master Aircrew Member Wings and Air Assault Badge.
